Located in the main square and constructed on the Quishuarcancha or Wiracocha palace with extracted stones of the Sacsayhuaman fortress.
Is estimated that the church began to be builded in 1560 and it was finished almost a century later. Its interior was restored in 2000, it has a baroque and Renaissance style; inside can be appraised near 400 impressive colonial paintings, most of them pertaining “La Escuela Cusqueña”. It conserves painting works of Cusco painters: Diego Quispe Tito, Basilio Santa Cruz, Antonio Sinchi Roca and Marcos Zapata. In addition there are very valuable samples of goldsmith and beautiful altarpieces. In this temple the image of the Lord of the Tremors (Señor de los temblores), Father of Cusco, is venerated. In its Gospel Tower there is the famous Maria Angola bell, molten in gold and bronze and it sound is listened to a distance of 40 km, this bell is one of biggest bells of the world. The Cathedral has a gorgeous custodia, that is carried in procession for the festividad of the Corpus Christi, and two chapels: the Chapel of Triunfo (Triumph), raised above the old palace of Wiracocha or Quishuarcancha, and the chapel Suntur Wasi, old house of emblems and arms.
