TAMBOPATA

Location

The national reserve of Tambopata has 274,690 hectares and is located in the south-eastern part of the department of Madre de Dios, providence of Tambopata.

This is land that it hasn’t been punished by the destruction of civilization. The National Reserve of Tambopata is located about 25 minutes by light airplane from Cusco. You will arrive to Puerto Maldonado (capital of the department of Madre de Dios) and sailing south through the river one gets to Tambopata.

The National Reserve of Tambopata, it has a huge extension of about 2,316 Sq miles that is protected by the Peruvian government. In this part of the world the Amazon has a perfect harmony between the flora and fauna of all the species that live in this part of the Planet.

In the department of Madre de Dios one can find the areas that are being conserving of major importance. The reserve of the Biosphere of the Manu (declare by the UNESCO as natural patrimony of humanity in 1987) the Reserve Zone of Tambopata-Candamo with population of many different varieties of species like the giant otter, and the eagle of harpia, has over 450 different species.

Here it is possible to observe groups of rare animals such as the Giant Otter, Collared Peccary, Tapir, Anaconda, Jaguar, Ocelot, Horned Currasow, etc. which still lead an otherwise undisturbed existence. The avifauna of the reserve is particularly rich boasting an incredible 590 species, more species than can be found in the whole of continental USA

A miracle of the nature: like Madre de Dios, a piece of land full of giant trees, powerful rivers and a very immense variety of species that live here, in where man is a stranger in this parts, and that is amazed in hearing the different sounds that come from the jungle. Here there is never silence. Here anything could happen.

By air: from Cusco – Puerto Maldonado (45 minutes) and by river in the route Maldonado – Tambopata

About health and vaccinations, it is required vaccine certificates of the yellow fever at the arrival in the airport of Puerto Maldonado; for this reason, make you sure to be update about being vaccinated and have all the certificates in order before you get. The vaccination is free in the airport of Puerto Maldonado. We suggest you come prepare with enough repellent for insects and its medication anti-malaria.

The driest season is between June and October. The rest of the year there is more rain, the rain season is between January and March. About clothing, it’s advisable to bring light clothes, long pants, long shirtsleeves, a big hat, shoes or tennis shoes to walk.
