CHOQUEQUIRAO

Location
Choquequirao is located in the Santa Teresa district, province of La Convencion in the department of Cusco. The archaeological site is 47 km from the village in the mountains Choquequirao Cachora belonging to the Salkantay Mountain Range, on the right bank of the Apurimac River.

Choquequirao drew world attention as the last Inca resistance against the conquerors. According to Peruvian archaeologists this lost city was where the Incas, who fled from Cuzco, took refuge and resisted for 40 years to the Spanish invasion. After the defeat of Manco Inca in Cusco survivors of a powerful ancient Inca Empire fled to Choquequirao. This was an important political and religious center where the last descendants of the empire continued to perform their rituals.
Very outside the marked trail, Choquequirao, the "Cradle of Gold" is an incredible Inca reserve compared in size and located Machu Picchu, dramatically, to about 2,000 feet above the raging Apurimac River. It is accessible only through a long hard walk.

Choquequirao is a newly discovered site, about two days to walk from the remote town of Cachora. This is located at about 4 hours drive north of the Inca capital of Cusco. Round trip is about 60 km from Cachora to Choquequirao.

The gun seems to be bottomless. From the vantage point from where the trek begins, the Apurimac River is greenish white with small black spots, which you know are large rocks about the size of a house. Away from the canyon, the huge snowy peaks of the Cordillera Vilcabamba seem to fill the sky.
