La Convencion
La Convencion was created by the law of July 25, 1857. Is the bigest province of Cusco (30,061.82 km²). Its capital is Quillabamba (1,047 meters above sea level), village that was recognized as a city by the Law 12834 of September 13 of 1957. The province has a population of 189,628 inhabitants (projection to year 2000), distributed in its 10 districts: Santa Ana, Echarate, Huayopata, Maranura, Ocobamba, Pichari, Quellouno, Quimbirí, Santa Teresa and Vilcabamba.
Within the province there is the Vilcabamba district, whose historical importance is due to have been the refuge of the last Inca rebels who resisted the Spanish power until 1572.
Among the most important places highlights: The Pongo de Mainique, the natural site of Sambaray, the Farm of Missions museum of Quillabamba, the lost ruins of Mosoj-Llacta, composed by stone blocks of great ample volume and wide Andenes, and the famous “lost cities” of Espiritu Pampa, Ñusta Hispana and Choquequirao, ceremonial Inca center located at the mountainous slope that is part of the mountain range system of Vilcabamba, on the Apurímac river.
Economically the province is producer of farming resources and natural gas (gas of Camisea), that has great importance not only for Cusco department but for all the country. Part of its territory also includes great extensions of high altitude jungle, in whose tropical forests there are remarkable forest reserves and plantations of Coffee, Cacao, Tea and more.
