Canchis
The province was created by the law of October 14, 1833. It is located in the highest part of the western and central mountain ranges, where the knot of Vilcanota or Chimboya forms and shows to its splendorous snow-covered summit Condoruna. Its capital is the city of Sicuani, at 3,574 meters above sea level. The climate is cold and dry. The province has an extension of 3,999.27 km ² and one population of 100,934 inhabitants (projection to year 2000) in its 8 districts: Sicuani, Combapata, Checacupe, Maranganí, Pitumarca, San Pablo, San Pedro and Tinta.
Canchis formely settled the historical province of Tinta, territorial circumscription that also included the present province of Canas. Tinta is famous by the insurrection of Túpac Amaru II in 1780 and for being the scene of the bloody events that lead to the prison and execution of the rebel.
It has important archaeological rests, like the Temple of Huiracocha (Sicuani), the fortress of Hatun Pucará, the monolith of Ancahuachana (Llocllora) and the agricultural terraces of Pucuta Erapata. In Maranganí works a small but prosperous textile industry of wool products.
