
Acomayo
Created by the law of the February 23 of 1861. Its name in quechua means “sand river”. The lagoon of Pomacanchi, located in the district of the same name, is in a small gorge covered by elevations and its presence grants to the zone a tempered and generally sunny climate. The rivers Vilcanota, Acomayo and Yanacocha cross its territory.
The province has an extension of 948,22 km ² and a population of 38,626 inhabitants (estimation to year 2000). It is compound with 7 districts: Acomayo, Acopia, Acos, Mosoc Llacta, Pomacanchi, Rondocán and Sangarará.
Its capital, the villa of Acomayo, is 3.207 meters above sea level and has a small artisan industry of blankets, ponchos and baize. Between main attractions of the province highlights the archaeological rests of Sóndor and Pumachapi Pucara.
